چکیده
stimulation permits routine EKG, EEG, and polysomnography Abstract—As the population of patients treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) grows and the patients age, more will require routine or emergent electrophysiologic tests. DBS artifact may render these uninterpretable, whereas stopping DBS may release symptoms that confound evaluation. The authors find that monopolar, but not bipolar, stimulation produces significant artifact during EKG, EEG, and polysomnography.

متن کاملElectrocardiogram artifacts caused by deep brain stimulation.
BACKGROUND Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is increasingly used to treat a variety of neurological conditions (e.g. movement disorders and chronic pain). This prospective study was designed to detect electrocardiogram (ECG) artifacts induced by deep brain stimulation and to investigate which factors (patient disease, electrode position within the brain or type of stimulation) produced these artifa...
متن کاملComparison of the efficacy of unipolar and bipolar electrode configuration during subthalamic deep brain stimulation.
Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nuclei (STN) is a well established treatment in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). Based on the clinical efficacy and elicited side-effects, both unipolar and bipolar stimulation modes may be applied. Bipolar stimulation usually produces a more focused and therefore thinner area of tissue activated during stimulation than unipolar stimulation does. The ...
متن کاملBrain complexity increases during the manic episode of bipolar mood disorder type I
Fractal dimension of the electroencephalographic (EEG) signal has been argued to reflect the complexity of the underlying brain processes. To this date, conventional studies of EEG in mood disorders have not been able to distinguish between patients and normal individuals. Here we show that, compared to normal subjects, EEG fractal dimension is significantly augmented in the manic episode of bi...
